Music Therapist Christine Korb to be Featured on CUTV News Radio

Music therapy is the elegant marriage between music as art and music as science.”

— Christine Korb

PORTLAND, OREGON, UNITED STATES, July 31, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — For many of us, music is therapy. It’s the soundtrack to our lives: it helps us relax; it excites us; it moves us; it heals us.

But the purpose of music is to communicate. Sadly, there are many individuals for whom communication is their greatest challenge. For these individuals, music therapy can serve as the bridge to connection because music is so universal.

Music therapists work as musicians and clinicians with almost every imaginable clientele, from premature babies and children on the autism spectrum to veterans and seniors struggling with dementia. And their results have been nothing short of miraculous.

“Music therapy is the elegant marriage between music as art and music as science,” says music therapist Christine Korb. “We utilize the power of music to accomplish non-musical goals. It’s ultimately about improving the quality of life for any individual no matter their circumstances.

While most music therapists begin as musicians and transition into the clinical social work, Korb began as a young social worker in Chicago. She says she came to music therapy through the back door as a songwriter and went back to school for a degree in music composition.

“I needed to do something with the healing powers of music,” recalls Korb. “It led me in the direction of the depths of what music is all about: the elements of how it affects us.”

Though Korb still works as a clinician, she is currently director of the music therapy program at Pacific University, where she teaches the next generation of music therapists. Music therapists are trained to be competent in piano, guitar and voice, as well as whatever their primary instrument may be.

Korb is also the author of The Music Therapy Profession, a collection of essays from her students over the years about why they chose to become music therapists.

“Many musicians in their hearts are actually music therapists and they don’t even realize it,” says Korb. “Not everyone who is especially talented at music is going to be successful as a professional musician. But there are alternative avenues to pursue with your great talent: meaningful, noble work. Word is getting out that music therapy can really help.”

CUTV News Radio will feature Christine Korb in an interview with Jim Masters on August 2nd at 4pm EDT and with Doug Llewelyn on August 9th at 4pm EDT.

Blind children find new hope through music in Wuhan China

A pupil at Wuhan City School for the Blind sings in a rock band established by teacher Zhang Long

BEIJING, BEIJING, CHINA, July 27, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Wuhan School for The Blind is the only school of its kind in Hubei province, central China. Not only does it cater to pupils who face enormous challenges because of their disabilities, but it is also proud to have a star teacher who has given new hope to the pupils.

China, with its huge population, has a large number of blind people. More than 5.5 million people are registered blind, among them, some 120,000 children. Though there are more than 50 special schools in major cities catering to the needs of these individuals, the task is never easy. Special facilities and teacher training is hard to come by and the children often feel alienated from society and lack ambition.

Zhang Long, born in 1975, volunteered to teach at Wuhan City School for the Blind in 2011. Though she had no experience teaching children with visual impairment, after seeing the difficulties faced by pupils there, she decided to change the course of her life and accept the challenge of making a difference to their future.

It wasn’t long before the gravity of the situation sunk in. As a music teacher she discovered many pupils at the school of 150 lacked the motivation to even turn up to class, believing their only career option would be to become a massage therapist, a common occupation for blind people in China.

Persevering, Zhang Long established a school radio station, a rock band for the most talented children, and invited performances from other schools. Eventually, the children responded to this new approach revealing both passion for music and hidden talent. One student, Gan Wenjun, proved gifted at piano, for which he won several national awards and even played with famous pianist Richard Clayderman in concert.

Among other successes, Zhang Long was awarded titles such as “Most Admirable Teacher in Wuhan” and a national honor “The Most Beautiful Teacher of China”,“I’ve never treated them as blind children,” says Zhang of the pupils. “It doesn’t matter that those kids can’t see. They can use their own ways to express themselves. I’ve never lowered my standards for them because they are blind, because to me they are just children.” Her approach seems to have worked and now pupils harbor ambitions such as to become a teacher, a professional singer and even an astronaut.

Wuhan City School for the Blind holds the belief that blind children are perfectly capable of the same
achievements as sighted kids, given the right guidance and a little courage. Since its establishment, it has helped over 500 children pursue their dreams and been a cradle of many rising stars in music, sports, teaching and other fields. It aims to keep making contribution to China’s endeavors in special education.

“U.S. Premiere of “La Linea”-the Story of Everyday Life on the Mexico-U.S. Border at Grand Performances.

Music performed by Panoptica: Roberto Mendoza.

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA, July 24, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Los Angeles, California—-July 2017——Grand Performances is pleased to announce the U.S. Premiere of “La Linea”. The project was conceived by Tijuana’s Nortec Collective founding member Roberto Mendoza who will be performing the music portion of this multi-faceted presentation on Friday, July 28 at 8:00 PM. He has been a key figure in the Mexican electronic scene and is working under the moniker Panoptica. Although “La Linea,” was envisioned prior to Donald Trump’s Presidential run, the relevance of this project during the present time makes the presentation prophetic and significant.

In addition to the musical performance, “La Linea” will feature LIVE modern, regional dance and distinct visual projections that tell the story of everyday life on the Mexico-U.S. border. The dance portion was choreographed by Manuel Ballesteros with graphics and video provided by Gerardo Audiffred.

Roberto Mendoza lives in Tijuana and explained that prior to the election, crossing the border to San Diego for a concert or clothes shopping seemed no different from passing from one local city to another. While he still crosses the border frequently, he elaborates that the journey has become a more mindful practice. Speaking about his personal: “La Linea,” Mendoza predicts that if the “wall” was ever constructed, the economy in both San Diego and Tijuana would collapse. Many workers cross from San Diego to Tijuana and the reverse is also common.

“La Linea,” was not designed to be a cautionary tale but a demystification of what it’s like to live in a border town where crossing the “line,” is a daily occurrence that thousands of people do from both the U.S. and Mexico. Mendoza expounds on the fact that “La Linea,” was not meant to be a political statement and yet it’s now impossible for it not to be.

Los Angeles has the second largest population of Mexicans in the Americas, trailing only Mexico City. Grand Performances is pleased to present the U.S. Premiere of a celebratory concert event that will both delight and enlighten our culturally enriched city. Grand Performances is located at the beautiful California Plaza at 350 S. Grand Avenue in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.

MORE ON GRAND PERFORMANCES: Celebrating its 31st year, Grand Performances’ mission is to inspire community, celebrate diversity, and unite Los Angeles through free access to global performing arts. Hailed as the “Best Free Outdoor Summer Concert Series” by Los Angeles Magazine and called “a grand gift to the public… democracy in musical action” by the Los Angeles Times, Grand Performances presents high-quality music, dance, theater, and more during the summer at the breathtaking California Plaza in the heart of Downtown as well as at other venues throughout the year including the Los Angeles State Historic Park and LAX.

Suicide loss survivors—those who have lost a friend or loved one to suicide—are at elevated risk for suicide, themselves. AAS Loss Survivor Division Chair Janet Schnell says, “After a suicide death, loss survivors can experience many depressive symptoms. For me, it was harder on anniversary dates, holidays, and when I would see things that reminded me of my brother.”

We can never speculate as to a single cause for a suicide. There is always a combination of complicated factors. What we do know is that every suicide death significantly affects over 100 people. “More than half of Americans personally know someone who has died by suicide, and we are all affected when a celebrity to whom we feel connected ends their life,” according to AAS president Julie Cerel.

Exposure to suicide, especially to close relations or beloved public figures, can increase risk. Be aware of those around you, check in with them, and ask them how you can help. If you are personally affected, please reach out and seek support. You can find more information regarding surviving a suicide loss here: http://bit.ly/2uFremP

ORIGIN is a vibrant New Age/World Fusion album blending Egyptian and western instrumentation; an energetic exploration of ancient instruments and modern sounds.

It’s an expression of human kindness…the intention to bring the beauty of diverse cultures together via fresh combinations of Arabic & western instruments.”

— Elise Lebec, singer, composer, producer, ORIGIN

BURBANK, CA, UNITED STATES, July 21, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Bay Area Film Company is pleased to announce the release of Elise Lebec's new album, ORIGIN, as well as an Akademia Award win (Best Christian/Gospel Song) for the single "Sufi Dance" and a nomination in the Hollywood Music and Media Awards. Lebec, an inspirational artist, singer and composer recalls the moment when the new age/world album was born, sharing “I looked into the eyes of the Goddess Sekhmet and felt my entire soul shift. There I was in Egypt, the Fertile Crescent of the Cradle of Civilization, the Origin of the Awakening of Humanity.”

Lebec's first trip to Egypt was profound, introducing her to new sounds and fresh insights about the people, their culture, and our mutual misunderstandings. ORIGIN, the album, is a direct result of her ensuing visits to Egypt. It is a vibrant New Age/World Fusion album blending Egyptian and western instrumentation and vocals featuring Lebec with special guest performances by Charlie Bisharat, Sheikh Mahmoud El Tohamy and 36 other magnificent musicians; it is an energetic, spiritual exploration of combining ancient instruments and modern sounds to convey Lebec's unique vision of the challenges facing today's world, available at www.EliseLebec.com. Bay Area Films releases the album worldwide today.

Under the same blazing Saqqaran sun that drenched the warrior deity of antiquity 5000 years ago, this musical citizen of the world had experienced the start of what has become a spiritual illumination…an epiphany which compelled her to embark on an intuitive, cross-cultural musical journey of discovery, deep creative expression, and a calling to use it as a vehicle for bringing disparate cultures together.

The outcome, ORIGIN, is an intense, feminine and uniquely beautiful album that Lebec will enter for a Best New Age Album GRAMMY Award this Fall. Upon hearing a preview, writer Karl Stober commented, "Lebec is the Siren of the Desert Sun in 2017. An incredible quest to the past in sound and arrangements."

ORIGIN is an amalgam of exotic Upper Egyptian traditional instruments, distinctive vocals, and contemporary production techniques, building a transcendent bridge between contrasting worlds. “It’s an expression of human kindness,” says Lebec of the release, “…the intention to bring the beauty of diverse cultures together via fresh combinations of Arabic & western instruments. We have built a harmonious narrative merging the millennia of Egyptian music with elements and forms of modern popular music to help exemplify that we are all related beings of planet Earth; one extended family turning in our respective orbits around the Sun.”

This “One World Turning” concept is woven into the fabric of the entire project and will be reflected in and represented by all the media releases, from the recorded music to promotional videos, interviews, live performances, and ORIGIN merchandise, which can be found at https://elise-lebec.myshopify.com/.

Music critic Jonathan Widran commented, “Elise shares her profound personal feeling of awakening and experiences of Egypt in music, and becomes a musical bridge builder of two prominent world cultures. Using exotic Upper Egyptian instrumentation, her distinctive vocals, and contemporary production techniques as a transcendent connection between East and West, she creates a powerful, compelling collection.”

ORIGIN was composed and executive produced by Lebec, who began recording in Cairo when she returned several times after her initial visit last August. Ancient instruments, expertly played by local traditional musicians under her direction include lute, dulcimer, oud, ancient flutes, Upper Egyptian tablas, and an assortment of handmade drums and percussion. Several Egyptian singers, including the very famous Sheikh Mamoud El Tahomy, and Arabic rappers were tapped to round out the project’s vivid authenticity. The resultant sessions were then sent back to Los Angeles to four-time GRAMMY® Award-winning Producer/Engineer Dave Way. He in turn brought in one of Prince’s programmers, Eric Anest, who applied Western song forms to the myriad tracks from Cairo resulting in musical “beds” onto which a variety of Western instruments were overdubbed. These include over 35 passionate musicians playing violin (such as Shadowfax’s GRAMMY® Award-winning violinist Charlie Bisharat), electric violins, cellos, alto sax, pedal steel guitar, Hammond organ, background vocals and, of course, Elise Lebec’s own lead vocals.

“As a composer, hearing music I have never heard before is like trying a new dish that tastes amazing, as if a whole new world is opening," Lebec shares. "Just when I think there’s nothing else to learn or explore, I realize that I haven’t even scratched the surface of Life Experience. To me, Music is an all-encompassing form of intimate expression. And what better force is there to bring divergent peoples together? That is the essence of this ORIGIN project! I want to create a dialogue about peace and understanding.”

Renegade Raw Milk Farmer Returns with his ‘Symphony in the Barn’

Symphony-in-the-Barn

Glencolton-Farms

Symphony in the Barns Event Takes Place on Glencolton Farms

Celebrity chefs and musicians partner to bring guests a local food feast and a symphony under the stars August 5 and 6th

…celebrate the food, the people, and the music that make up this community. We are celebrating life on the farm and the life it sustains through the food produced here.”

— Michael Schmidt

TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, July 20, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — On Saturday August 5th and Sunday 6th, 2017, classical musical group, Music in the Barns, will partner with Glencolton Farms for a weekend-long celebration of music and food and agriculture. The festivities will take place on the farm: 393889 Concession 2, Durham ON. Classical music radio personality Alexa Petrenko will emcee the event.

The two-day festival will feature food from dozens of Ontario’s local organic farmers prepared by Toronto’s top chefs. Guests will hear several concerts—played by a team of international musicians–during the weekend, most notably an after dark concert under the stars Saturday beginning at 7:00pm and a late night roaming concert beginning at 10:00. Sunday will feature a local food feast prepared by several celebrity chefs, including Toronto chef Jamie Kennedy, and Carey McLellan amongst many others. There will be additional concerts and music throughout the afternoon and evening Sunday.

From 1995 until 2012, Michael Schmidt hosted Symphony in the Barn as a concert on the farm with and for international music lovers. Organizers hope to reinvent this much-loved, annual event by introducing local food and celebrity chefs.

Past participant and world-class clarinetist, Kathy Pirtle remarks on her experience playing for the symphony, “for me, this was one of the most powerful music experiences I’ve had in my life. Playing the concerto with cows singing in the background sent goosebumps down my spine as I was playing it. It was a significant moment in my life as an artist. The farm represents the energy and synergy of life.”

Glencolton Farms, host for the weekend, is a biodynamic farm in Durham, Ontario famous for their legal battles to promote food freedom in Canada. Farmer Michael Schmidt has been the center of the controversy over raw milk since 1994, often appearing in court to make his case for food freedom.

“Music is an important part of my life and the community surrounding the farm,” Schmidt says. “It is part of what draws people here. We host this to bring people together and celebrate the food, the people, and the music that make up this community. We are celebrating life on the farm and the life it sustains through the food produced here.”

Tickets are available (until sold out) through the organizers’ ticket sales page. Proceeds from the event will support the Raw Milk Legal Defense Fund.

The Toronto based “Music in the Barns,” founded in 2008, takes classical concerts out of the traditional hall with their signature, site-specific “installation concerts.”

Glencolton Farms is a biodynamic farm in Durham, Ontario offering internships to aspiring farmers and selling meats and baked good to their community.

Grand Ole Opry Member Martina McBride Honored With Donation Of 53,000 Diapers

Prior to her performance at the Grand Ole Opry last night, Martina McBride was recognized for her commitment to helping families and children with a donation of 53,000 diapers from the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN), and its founding sponsor Huggies®.

Huggies® and National Diaper Bank Network Recognize Martina’s Commitment to Improving the Lives of Children and Families

I know the importance of clean diapers in keeping a baby happy and healthy. The fact that many mothers can’t afford the diapers they need for their baby is troubling. All babies deserve clean diapers.”

— Martina McBride

NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, UNITED STATES, July 19, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — What is acclaimed country singer and songwriter Martina McBride going to do with 53,000 diapers donated in her honor last night at the Grand Ole Opry House? She’ll make sure the diapers—a basic need of every infant and toddler—are delivered to the Nashville Diaper Connection. The community-based nonprofit helps local families who struggle to afford enough diapers to keep their infants and toddlers clean, dry and healthy.

Prior to her performance last night at the Opry, McBride was recognized by the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN), and its founding sponsor Huggies®, for the many memorable moments she has created for Opry audiences during the past 25 years, as well as for her work with Team Music Is Love, the charity she founded in 2011. Through Team Music is Love, McBride regularly engages with her fans to help improve the lives of children and families in hometowns throughout the U.S.

In honoring McBride, Huggies donated a day’s worth of diapers for each of the 4,400 audience seats at the Opry, which equals 26,500 diapers for 4,400 babies. As she performed twice, the donation was doubled to 53,000 diapers.

McBride’s Team Music Is Love will help coordinate the delivery of the diapers in the coming weeks to the Nashville Diaper Connection, a member of National Diaper Bank Network.

“While my three daughters are grown, I know the importance of clean diapers in keeping a baby happy and healthy,” said McBride. “The fact that many mothers can’t afford the diapers they need for their baby is troubling. I’m honored that Team Music Is Love is working with the National Diaper Bank Network to help address diaper need. All babies deserve clean diapers.”

Since its founding in June 2013, the Nashville Diaper Connection has distributed more than 130,000 diapers. The 501(c)3 organization accepts donations of diapers and dollars to help struggling families in Nashville. More information is available at www.nashvillediaperconnection.org.

McBride resides in Nashville with her husband, John, and their three daughters. Keep up to date on her activities on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
