Design Indaba Festival and Conference 2018

Experience the world's leading creative currency that's driving design for a better world with Design Indaba's iconic annual conference.

CAPE TOWN, WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA, November 29, 2017 / — The Design Indaba conference and festival, taking place from 21-24 February 2018, is going beyond design to create a multi- sensory event where you can hear, see, learn and experience the future of creative thinking and design activism. Awarded as the Best Conference in the World, Design Indaba aims to make a positive impact on society by building a movement that attracts producers of meaningful culture and business, regardless of sector or industry.

The first three confirmed speakers of the substantial 2018 panel include celebrated and prolific spatial designer Morag Myerscough who most recently reimagined the interior of the Bernie Grant Arts Centre cafe in London. Dutch landscape architect Peter Veenstra, co-founder of LOLA Architects, created the Adidas Campus headquarters in Germany and is bringing his structural genius to the Design Indaba stage. The third confirmed speaker is Cannes Lions award-winning filmmaker Sunu Gonera who hails from Zimbabwe and whose work tells authentic African stories, as seen in the music video he created for Khuli Chana.

With three full days of engaging speakers, exhibitions and a film- and music festival, the 2018 conference is set to amaze, uplift and motivate delegates to find new ways in which to design a better world.

Taking place in conjunction with the world-renowned Design Indaba Conference, the annual Design Indaba Festival 2018 will run from 21 – 24 February 2018 at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town. An experiential wonderland of live music, films, Chefs Table dinners, performances and exhibitions, the Design Indaba Festival encompasses the Design Indaba’s longstanding annual Film Festival, Nightscape, and the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa, as well as the Emerging Creatives Programme. New to the festival in 2018 are pop-up restaurants featuring renowned Chefs and stand-alone performances by headline acts.

Festival passes are available to the general public – you don’t need to be a conference delegate to attend. An all-access, three-night pass allows festivalgoers to experience the full offering of creative excellence. Alternatively, a one-night ticket will allow you to catch a smaller selection of the amazing performing acts and progressive installations on offer.

Nightscape will run from 22 – 24 February 2018 on the Artscape Piazza. Expect a wonderland of curated gourmet street food, DJs, VIP hospitality suites, installations, performers and music, creating an immersive experience in which you wouldn’t be surprised to find a Conference speaker taking the stage to perform a DJ set.

The specially curated selection on offer expands the continent and beyond, with highlights coming from unknown talents around Africa, special performances by selected Conference speakers, and a range of local and international artists breaking boundaries. Not to mention crowd-pulling headline acts.

Emerging Creatives will showcase samples of their work from 21 – 24 February 2018 within the Artscape. The Emerging Creatives Programme excels in supporting the next generation of creative talents and provides young designers with a much-needed launch platform.

The Most Beautiful Object in South Africa showcase gives the nation a chance to express what constitutes beauty. While some may consider beauty an aspect of taste and others know it on sight, beauty becomes far more profound than a visual sensation when design attributes such as social significance, economic impact, usability, sustainability and even humour are thrown into the mix. The Most Beautiful Object in South Africa showcase runs from 21 – 24 February 2018 at the Artscape.

The Design Indaba Film Festival will run from 22 – 24 February 2018 and screenings take place in the Artscape Arena during the evenings. There will be a selection of films on offer, with two screenings per night, at 18h00 and 20h30. The ticket price per film is R85.

The films are not limited by genre, format or theme. Simply expect a refreshing, globally relevant foray into film that’s leading the way in creativity, from documentaries about various creative disciplines and figures, to quirky and artistic creative expressions making their African debut. Admission to both the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa and Emerging Creatives are included in the Nightscape, Film Festival and conference tickets and will give attendees a view into the future of creativity in South Africa and across the continent.

Tickets for Nightscape and the Film Festival (on sale from 10 December 2017) are available from Webtickets and are sold separately to the Design Indaba Conference and Simulcast.

● Design Indaba Conference and Simulcast: 21-23 February 2018

Makes a Great Gift, "We are Woodstock" the Novel. It Tells a Love Story at the Greatest Concert of the Hippie Movement.

This novel puts you right on the grounds of the Woodstock Festival

A love story that takes place at the Woodstock Festival

Between these pages is a wonderful love story

Learn of the performances, behind the scene shenanigans, and the future of the stars

This novel puts you right on the grounds of the Woodstock Festival

The Woodstock Festival: 3 Days of Peace & Music

Through the pages of this historical, fictional, autobiographical novel of the Woodstock Festival, the author will send you back in time to that very weekend.

A love story that takes place at the Woodstock Festival.”

— Glenn Eldridge

HOUSTON, TX, UNITED STATES, November 29, 2017 / — HOUSTON, TEXAS, USA, November, 2017 / —

This wonderful novel puts you on Yasgur’s Farm on the weekend of August 15, 1969. You will be at the Woodstock Music & Art Fair. It’s an easy read and a fun trip as the Hippie Movement of the 1960s comes to a close. It's a novel, not a book of facts. You will live the concert as if you were there. This concert had the who’s who of rock groups of the time, when musicians weren’t seen on TV like today. This was the place that many hippies got their first glimpse of the musical artists, who’s music shaped us all.

This festival was billed as 3 Days of Peace & Music and as Max Yasgur uttered on stage, “Nothing but peace and music.” What makes this book different is that it isn’t from one of the promoters or one of the performers point of view, this novel is by one of the spectators, a person in the audience, a person like you. As you read, he tells you of his story, which to him is one of the greatest weekend of his life. Glenn Eldridge, Author of We are Woodstock, describes the novel as, "A love story that takes place at the Woodstock Festival." It starts with Glenn getting fired at work and getting dumped by his girlfriend and then meeting Gail the first night there.

He purchased his tickets when they first went on sale and still has them today. They can be seen on the back cover of the book. He arrives a day early with a couple of friends, so they miss the traffic jam, but you will learn all about that. How? As the reader you will learn it as the central character does, though radio reports and headlines of the news, that are sometimes read from the stage. Also you will hear all the announcements, where the infirmaries can be found and which acid to avoid.

This novel is made interesting because the words translates to your eyes as the whole festival opens up to your senses. The grounds of Yasgur’s Farm is described from the camping areas to the concert area to the Hog Farm area, where people are feed for free. You will see the crowds like ocean waves covering the landscape. The way they are dressed and the way so many came unprepared for the weekend. You’ll learn how the promoters found Max Yasgur’s Farm for this Aquarian Exposition, another name it was known by, and what a great deal Max made for himself when leasing his land, since the festival was scheduled to begin in 30 days from when they found him. There are many fun facts to learn from this book before, during and after this historic event.

You’ll learn about the performer too stoned to get on stage, others stoned that went on anyway. One group refuse to play in the rain and it did rain. One artist had to sing to prove who she was because she forgot her backstage pass. You’ll learn about the emcee who was chosen less than an hour before his first announcement and the fact that the Governor was going to end the concert by calling in the troops. There is so much to learn in this fun read.

Did I mention that between the main character going skinny dipping, dealing with dumb girls and wondering whether he should be broken hearted about his girlfriend dumbing him, that he meets a free-spirited flower child named Gail. She not only wins Glenn’s heart, but as the reader you to will fall in love with her.

Makes a great gift for the holiday, so you can relive your hippie years or let your children know what summed up the 60’s in general. It was the first really big concert that brought people from all over the country and the world to celebrate a way of life.

This is a fictional, historical autobiographical story of the greatest Rock & Roll event ever. It will never happen again. People just came to hear the music, be peaceful and see the artists that they only knew through their music. Remember back in 1969, the Mets won the World Series, Manson did his dirty deed and we landed on the moon. Woodstock was the final expression of a generation, after that we left the 60s and went on to the 70s.

If you weren’t there, this novel will put you there and if you were, let this novel take you back. By the way, Michael Lang wanted Roy Rogers to end the concert singing “Happy Trail.” Roy himself said, “If I were there with all those hippies, they would have boo’d me off the stage.” I’m not so sure they would have, but for an informative story and a delightful love story, pick up a copy and read We are Woodstock. You can also find this book on the selves at the Woodstock Museum in Upstate New York. Visit it.

An excerpt from "We are Woodstock":

The crowd is opening up like the Red Sea as she continues yelling my name as if to be looking for me, while she holds my hand and pulls me behind her. We finally get as close to the stage as we can, which is two rows from the front. At this point she spins around and puts her arms around my neck and kisses me. Now I can see what she had seen through the binoculars. On the stage, written on the drum is “The Who.” She remembered they were the one group I really wanted to see. Then comes an announcement from the stage,

“Ladies and Gentlemen, would you please show your appreciation, they came to us especially for this show, please warmly welcome, "The Who!”

Urban Ideas Announces Independent Artists and Creatives Performance, Promotion and Distribution Opportunities for 2018

Urban Ideas Limited Partnership, LLP and its independent label and publishing group are unveiling its 2018 growth plans which means big things for creatives.

It takes a team, a vision, a talent and a lot of fortune to be successful. There are no guarantees, but its worth the effort.”

— Michael Towns Senior Partner Urban Ideas, LLP

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, UNITED STATES, November 28, 2017 / — How do you get started, make money and build a career or business in the entertainment or creative space? Well there are many roads, but invariably you need to know someone. Urban Ideas Limited Partnership, LLP ("Urban Ideas") and its independent label group which includes Chicago Creed Music and Media Group (Chicago focused multi-genre label), Urban Creed Music and Media Group (national multi-genre label), Indie Chart Music Group (national multi-genre label with aggregator focus) and Kingdom Records (national gospel label) along with Urban Ideas Publishing Group and Urban Ideas Consulting Group whose tag line is "The Creative Commerce People" are the folks to know.

On Thursday November 30th at 7:30 PM at the Music Garage located at 345 N. Loomis in the Showcase Room on the 5th floor you will learn about the company's vision along with the opportunities it is forecasting to emerge for the right talents. So who should attend? Well according to Columbia Entrepreneurship and Finance professor and Urban Ideas partner and Chicago Creed label chief Michael Towns "This event is for anyone who wants to learn about creative entrepreneurship. It is for people who want to make money as artists and entrepreneurs. Whether you are selected by us or you choose another path, the information should serve you well."

What kind of talent? Sherree Lee Creative Director and A&R for Chicago Creed says we are thinking outside the box. We want singers, musicians, comedians, Broadway singer-actor types. We are also seeking various genres. We want jazz, pop, kids musical acts, R&B, hip-hop, rock, spoken word, inspirational, gospel, blues, EDM and more. The caveat is that we are really focusing on younger acts. Mind you, we do have our eyes open for that special seasoned act, but our plan is really looking to develop 18 to 28 year old artists. We are casting a wide net looking for talented people to help get them established and create some fantastic content. Our age constraint is only for the music program. So comedians, entrepreneurs and authors just come. Oh yeah, we also have some great internship opportunities.

What's the catch? Sherree laughs and says well that is why you have to attend. Seriously, the important thing is that we are looking for people who are serious, focused and can take direction. We have had a few stops and starts with folks who couldn't make a decision, follow through or their view of the business didn't mesh with our knowledge. We will talk about that as well.

Join Us at the Music Garage to meet the team and to learn more: 3 Mics Thursdays Events, Compilations Records, Covers Music Strategy, Tour Opportunities, Promotional Opportunities, Book Publishing, And More…

The informational will take place on Thrusday, November 30, 2017 a the Music Garage, 345 North Loomis, Chicago, IL in the Showcase Room (RM 515) at 7:30 PM CST.

Solidarity Event Raises Over $41,000 for Las Vegas Victims Fund

LAS VEGAS, NV, UNITED STATES, November 27, 2017 / — While many Las Vegans were still in shock reeling over the tragic events that took place on October 1, 2017, Chris Lowden, owner of Stoney’s Rockin’ Country was searching for a way to unite his community. “This heinous massacre was personal for us and rocked us to our core,” said Lowden, “my employees, my patrons, and their families were all at Route 91. It’s an event the Las Vegas Country Music Community looks forward to all year long. And now, our community was devastated. So, I knew I had to do something and do it quickly.”

In the morning hours Monday October 2nd, less than 24 hours after tragedy struck, Lowden was organizing a solidarity concert with 100% of the proceeds going to County Commissioner Steve Sisolak’s Las Vegas Victims Fund. “As soon as I started pulling things together, the response was overwhelming. Everyone wanted to help,” recalled Lowden.

And everyone did help. County Commissioner Steve Sisolak opened his Las Vegas Victims Fund GoFundMe to be the official beneficiary. Country music artists Tony Jackson, Carter Winter, and Justin Holmes immediately offered to perform. Many more followed including Dylan Schneider who had just performed at Route 91 hours before the shooting. “Dylan had just gotten home and heard we were doing this event. He called me and said I am in and flew across the country the same day to play,” continued Lowden. Even Taylor Winston, the infamous veteran who stole a truck to help the injured, jumped on board to help the benefit.

In a little over 24 hours, Chris Lowden and Stoney’s Rockin’ Country pulled together a solidarity concert that unified a close-knit community at the time they needed it most. Over 1400 people showed up. They prayed together. They sung the national anthem and said the pledge of allegiance together. They listened to country music together. And together, they raised over $41,000 for the Las Vegas Victims Fund.

“I really just want to thank everyone for bringing our community together and showing them that it is okay to come together, to celebrate the music that we love, and to show that hate will not win over love,” concluded Lowden.

"The Memories of God" New Song Released by Pastor, Peter Unger

A new Christian song explains how memories live on, just like god

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, USA, November 27, 2017 / — Peter wrote this song for the older people, who he had the honor and privilege of ministering to over many years. Pete explained that Many had a humble, kind, and appreciative dignity; qualities born of a long life shaped by faith and wisdom. Most were to experience the debilitating effects of age, including mental decline and dementia. During visits he struggled and prayed with them through the inevitable spiritual and emotional valleys of such a decline.

He further explained that those, for whom faith and a personal relationship with God most defined what it meant to be a Christian were the most spiritually resilient. The habit of opening themselves to God's loving Grace. had not been developed overnight but was the result of  many years of prayerfully centering themselves in that love. While not perfect, and despite low points, they often seemed to glow with an essential awareness of, and trust in God's life restorative love. What amazed Pete was how often they uplifted him spiritually during such visits. He hopes that this song will reflect their witness and minister to those who need it most.
When listening to the song, "The Memories of God" gives an instantly uplifting and inspiring vibe. A well produced and thought out song, the lyrics are instantly felt to be genuine and from the heart- Obviously reflected from the real-life experiences that Peter has gone through as a Pastor.

Lyrics from the song include; “The memories of god, are like those of men. They last forever and give life back again”. The song also explains how memories live on, even when physical health declines.

Background wise, Pastor Unger holds a BA from Goddard College, an MDiv. from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate from Drew Univ. Writing and performing songs has been a critical part of his ministry. He was a finalist in the USA International Songwriting Competition, and has had two music CD's published. The most recent was "Songs of Grace" available on numerous online sites including Amazon, and Spotify.

He is currently a pastor of a church in Northampton, PA. Pete also has several other songs releasing soon, including "Christmas Cards" fitting nicely in time for the holiday season.

The Los Angeles Music and Art School to Mount First Ever Playmaking Show at USC’s Scene Dock Theatre

LAMusArt's inaugural Playmaking show features two volumes of original plays written by eleven students (ages 9-11) and performed by over twenty adult actors.

We are always expanding and evolving our lessons to better serve the East LA area and get local artists involved in our mission.”

— Manuel Prieto, LAMusArt Executive Director

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, November 27, 2017 / — The Los Angeles Music and Art School (LAMusArt) announces its first ever Playmaking show, FIRST CLASS: THE INAUGURAL PLAYS, to be held at the University of Southern California’s Scene Dock Theatre on Monday, December 4. “FIRST CLASS” will feature two volumes of original plays written by eleven LAMusArt students (ages 9-11) and performed by over twenty adult actors. An array of accomplished performers, directors and designers will join the organization in mounting this special show.

Playmaking is an innovative program in which young students learn the fundamentals of playwriting over the course of ten weeks, resulting in a live and fully-produced performance of the student-written plays. Playmaking is the third program to be added to the Drama department at LAMusArt, accompanying a weekly acting class, and an annual five-week summer arts enrichment program, Camp MusArt.

“After seeing the response from our summer enrichment program and our acting course, the needs and wants for more opportunities in drama discourse were apparent. We are always expanding and evolving our lessons to better serve the East LA area and get local artists involved in our mission,” said Executive Director, Manuel Prieto.

During the first seven weeks of the 10-week session, students concentrate on the academic approach to dramatic writing, focusing on the concepts of character, narrative, dialogue and stage directions. At the end of the seventh week, students apply the skills they’ve learned to create an original play and lyrics to an original song at Play Day. Perhaps one of the most exciting experiences of Playmaking, Play Day, is a day-long retreat where students will put their newfound knowledge of dramatic writing to work. Each student will be paired with an adult dramaturge who will serve as the student’s mentor, helping to guide them through their creative writing process. Once the plays are written, professional actors are assigned to each play, and rehearse with an adult director and an adult composer. At the end of the rehearsal process, students will have the opportunity to see a realized version of their original plays and songs performed and directed by adults.

Modeled after a similar program of the same name from The 52nd Street Project in New York City, Playmaking is an experiment in equitable and collaborative storytelling and a way for students to have a unique experience of success. This academically enriching program teaches important life skills in tandem with writing skills.

The kid playwrights for FIRST CLASS: THE INAUGURAL PLAYS are Abraham Aguiar, Aubrey Arias,Enzo Chavez, Diamond Fierro, Helena Minguet, Ethan Neal , Natalia Rosales, Sayer Uribe, Alice Weiss, Margaret Weiss, and Diana Zayas.

The adult dramaturge/directors are Burton Chaikin, Judy Chaikin, Sarah Cho, Alejandra Cisneros, Patricia Garza, Anton Handel, Luke Kanter, Jonathan Munoz Proulx, Maria Pasquarelli, Pia Shah, Nathan Singh, Armando Torres Pina and Ashley Wellman.

The adult actors include Lauren Blumenfeld, Chae Chaput, Kate Chindlund, Ben Crutcher, Cole Cuomo, Dylan Dawson, Alisa De Los Santos, Evan Enderle, Andrew Erath, Holley Fain, Cecilia Fairchild, Delanie Fischer, Corey Johnson, Andrea Limon, Vella Lovell, Frank Martinelli, Jake Minton, Pia Shah, Caitlin Stegemoller and Armando Torres Pina.

The composer is Austin Chanu. The Lighting Designer is Will Chandler. The Costume Designer is Manuel Prieto.

This program is supported in part by the Awesome Foundation and the McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation, along with key supporters at the USC School of Dramatic Arts. FRESH START is a one-night-only performance on Monday, December 4 with Volume 1 at 6:00pm and Volume 2 at 7:30pm. Tickets are now on sale at
