Collaboration between D.C. charters, traditional schools a contentious issue

Watchdog logo

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The D.C. Public Charter School Board says it wants to enhance school quality and increase choice for all students in the city, but some parents and activists are worried. They fear a lack of collaboration and transparency between the D.C. Public School district and the charter school sector would threaten neighborhood schools. Others worry collaboration is code for restricting charter growth.

Modern Design Is a Nod to Hotel’s Distinguished History

The Washington Marriott Wardman Park recently announced the completion of its renovation of 1,048 guestrooms, 104 suites, concierge lounge and public spaces. Originally built as condominiums in the 1920s, the design of the new NW Washington, DC hotel suite’s draws from the hotel’s origins and blends both traditional and modern elements. The multiple million dollar renovation is an investment by the hotel’s owners, The JBG Companies of Chevy Chase, Md.

“We are excited to share our dynamic new look and feel with our guests,” said Bill Walsh, General Manager of Washington Marriott Wardman Park. “Our guests have asked for a sophisticated yet comforting ambiance for both relaxation and work; we have delivered that and more. Our redesigned guestrooms combined with our thoughtful service, convenient location, premium conference space and our mobile guest technology positions the Washington Marriott Wardman Park as world class destination for meetings, business and leisure travel.”

Dallas-based architecture design firm, Leo A. Daly, took inspiration from the roaring 1920s. The refreshed look evokes the Art Deco period with rich colors, carpets with bold geometric shapes and ornamental fixtures. Guestroom furniture is wrapped in faux linen, while a palette of warm gray is interwoven with pops of azure blue on the headboard or pillows. White and ivory detailing in the walls and window treatments pairs with the tailored fabrics and the clean-lined furnishings. Each room features easily movable furniture — guests can expect either a sofa, which can split apart into two separate seating groups, lounge chairs or ottomans.

“Our design sought to bring back to life the glamour of a time and excitement when an invitation to Wardman Park meant a person had reached the pinnacle of society life,” Kathy Chavez, Project Manager at Leo A. Daly said. “We drew from today’s fashion with a color palette that is classic rather than trendy to create a contemporary modern feel for guests.”

Washington Marriott Wardman Park also features new Marriott Hotels brand technology, designed for guests who embrace the mobile lifestyle for work as well as leisure. These added services include:

Red Coat Direct, a first-of-its-kind app that lets meeting organizers adjust and edit their meeting requests and preferences with a touch of a button and without ever leaving the meeting room.
Mobile Check-In & Check-Out, a mobile capability that provides an enhanced arrival experience with check-in up to two hours before arrival and automatic notifications when a room is ready.
Free Wi-Fi is available to all Marriott Rewards® members, who enjoy free in-room Wi-Fi when they book directly on Marriott.com, Marriott’s mobile app, or by calling 1-800 MARRIOTT.

A $100 Weekend in Washington, D.C.

Assuming you’re not a lobbyist in town to woo steak-loving senators, Washington can be a great place to visit on a budget. With 17 free Smithsonian museums, gratis gorillas at the National Zoo, engrossing monuments that are far more than photo opportunities, and open public events speckling the spring and summer calendar, you need not spend a dime on entertainment — as I found out during a recent visit, the 12th in my occasional $100 Weekend series.

Celebrate the Grateful Dead’s 50th anniversary in and around D.C.

Grateful Dead 50th anniversary celebrations are happening all year across the country and Washington is no exception. In addition to Thursday’s Dear Jerry concert, District Deadheads have plenty of opportunities to let their freak flag fly. (Almost) JerryTakoma Park’s John Kadlecik used to play in Furthur with the Dead’s Phil Lesh and Bob Weir. Now he has a new group, the DC Mystery Cats, that re-creates Jerry Garcia Band shows in their entirety. In June, he’ll return to Gypsy Sally’s for three shows (3401 K St. NW; June 3 & 4, 8:30 p.m., $15, June 5, 9 p.m., $20). In August, he’ll celebrate what would have been Garcia’s 73rd birthday at the Howard Theatre (620 T St. NW; Aug. 1, 8 p.m., $20-$25).

Homewood Suites Logo

WASHINGTON, May 13, 2015 — The Homewood Suites by Hilton Washington, D.C. is premiering a new look inspired by Hilton’s brand theme for Homewood Suites renovations, ‘Take Flight.’ According to Hilton, the renovations are intended to do more than just make the space look pretty; they are a result of redefining space to meet the needs of how today’s guests travel and want to use the public areas during their stay. At the 175 guest-suite, extended-stay Homewood Suites Washington, D.C., the renovation encompassed the entire first level of the hotel. Guests are now greeted in a lobby with a strategically placed fireplace; modern finishes and furnishings, including ceramic, plank-tile floors; new energy efficient lighting; three new flat screen TVs; seating arrangements that are flexible for working and relaxing, including a signature community “wing” table. In addition, the Home Office business center, flexible meeting space, and the Suite Shop for sundries are all open to the lobby creating a fluid environment for work, relaxation and dining. The color palette is blue and cream with splashes of red, reflecting on the nation’s national colors. And for a bit of whimsy, the artwork is black and white photography of past Presidential dogs.

The 175 one-bedroom suite, extended-stay property is managed by Crestline Hotels & Resorts LLC. It is in the heart of Northwest Washington, D.C. on Massachusetts Avenue and is near the White House, within walking distance to the McPherson Square Metro station, as well as in close proximity to the Smithsonian Institute, the Washington Monument, the National Zoo and other area attractions.
