Iran says it seeks peace but stands ready for war

(MENAFN) Iran has declared that, while it does not seek conflict, it is better prepared for war than during last year’s 12-day confrontation with Israel, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Monday.

Speaking to foreign diplomats in Tehran, Araghchi emphasized, “We do not seek war, but we are prepared for war, and we are even more prepared than the previous twelve-day war.”

He also stressed Iran’s willingness to engage in dialogue under the right conditions: “We are also prepared for negotiations, but negotiations that are fair, honorable, and from an equal position, with mutual respect, and based on mutual interests. The talks must be in good faith and not orders and dictations.”

The comments come amid heightened unrest in Iran, which began in late December as protests over the sharp devaluation of the rial and worsening economic conditions. The demonstrations spread rapidly across multiple cities, escalating into what Tehran describes as the worst national upheaval in recent years.

Araghchi accused “terrorists” among the protesters of committing widespread destruction, including torching mosques, medical facilities, government buildings, and killing hundreds of civilians and security personnel in episodes described as “ISIS-like violence.”

He also alleged that the United States and Israel played a “big hand” in orchestrating the unrest, claiming Tehran recorded audio orders given to armed agents within the crowds to target protesters, bystanders, and security forces.
