S. Korea Court Holds Final Hearing in Trial of Ousted President

(MENAFN) A South Korean court convened Tuesday for closing arguments in the insurrection prosecution of deposed President Yoon Suk Yeol, with the nation fixated on potential sentences ranging up to capital punishment for his controversial martial law declaration, media reported.

The Seoul Central District Court reconvened proceedings after Friday's session collapsed when defense attorneys for former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun consumed eight hours scrutinizing documentary evidence, effectively stalling the trial.

Tuesday's session is set to feature Yoon's legal representatives examining paper evidence before delivering closing statements, followed by special counsel Cho Eun-suk's final prosecutorial opinion and anticipated sentencing recommendations for all eight accused individuals, including Yoon.

The tribunal will wrap up the trial by hearing defendants' final declarations.

Separately Monday, a Seoul court initiated the first hearing in Yoon's enemy collaboration case concerning allegations he authorized military drone deployments into North Korea during 2024.

Yoon was detained and charged this past January for orchestrating an insurrection, marking an unprecedented moment as South Korea's first sitting president ever placed in custody. Authorities released him in March, re-arrested him in July, and he has remained jailed continuously since.

The Constitutional Court officially terminated Yoon's presidency last April.

The former leader confronts numerous additional prosecutions connected to the aborted martial law attempt, including separate insurrection-related proceedings.

Prosecutors demanded a 10-year prison term for Yoon last month on obstruction of justice and related counts arising from his 2024 martial law effort.
