Brussels Hosts Protest Music Event Against Israel’s Eurovision Inclusion

(MENAFN) Musicians and performers organized an alternative concert in Brussels to oppose Israel’s involvement in the Eurovision Song Contest, arguing that the competition has moved away from its original principles of solidarity and respect for human rights.

In comments given according to reports, Belgian actress Katrien De Ruysscher, one of the main organizers behind the initiative, explained that the event, called “United for Palestine,” was launched after activists discovered that Israel would still compete in this year’s Eurovision while Belgian broadcasters remained part of the contest.

"We found that the participation of Israel is very problematic due to the genocide in Gaza and everything. So we decided maybe we should create like a counter event, an event that focuses on the meaning of the Eurovision Song Contest, which is uniting people and the values of human rights. And that's why we try to create this event," De Ruysscher said.

The gathering took place Tuesday in the Belgian capital at the same time as Eurovision’s opening semi-final, where both Belgium and Israel were scheduled to perform.

The alternative festival was arranged by Belgian civil society organizations, labor unions, and pro-Palestinian solidarity movements under the slogan: “Don't watch Eurovision. No stage for genocide.”

Its lineup included Palestinian performers, local Belgian musicians, and former Belgian Eurovision participants, with the event blending live music and messages of solidarity.
